The Bow Scarf Tutorial

Thanks to Yet Another Beauty Site, there is a super trendy new way to wear your spring scarves! You can fasten a super fun bow to accompany your rainy days. First, make the scarf slightly longer on one side. Next, make a loop hiding the end in an upward motion. Then, hold the loop in the middle creating a bow look. Take the shorter side of the scarf and wrap it around the bow. Finally, bring the end of the short side around the bow and through the middle. Pull it to make it as tight as you want! Follow the image above to fashion your own big scarf bow.

Great Gatsby Inspired

The Great Gatsby is a masterful piece of literature written by F. Scott Fitzgerald in 1925. The novel is set in 1922, during the heat of the Roaring Twenties post World War I. It has also been dubbed "The Great American Novel" and has since been made into four motion pictures. The books themes, motifs and symbolism withstand the test of time and remain relevant in classrooms around the globe.

Recently, there has been heightened Gatsby Buzz because the book is being made into a film produced by Baz Luhrmann staring Leonardo DiCaprio and other big name celebrities. The movie releases next month over Mother's Day Weekend and is going to be a box office hit. The 3D film release has brought back some fashion inspiration from the retro 1920s.

The 1920's was a time of freedom, lavish fashion and sensuality. It was a time where women gained suffrage and the flapper was in full force. Short dresses, tassels and extravagant jewelry were the fashion must-haves for the time. Pearls and bulky gems were adorning necks, wrists and ears galore. Lace and sheer layers looked stunning in gowns and flapper dresses. A short hairstyle and a statement hat make the look complete.

High fashion has taken this style and run with it. Vogue, bridal fashion and starlettes have paid homage to this decade of style. Head pieces, short and elegant waves as well as flapper inspired frocks have been gracing center-folds and runways ever since the 1920s.

The Dress

The dress is a crucial piece to the Gatsby style. Gems, glittering sequins and short tailoring make the style flawless. An array of colors work for this piece but pale pinks, whites and greys work best for the era. A thick strap, high collar is best for these shift dresses. Choose a strapped sandal and some flashy jewelry to finish off the look.

The Hair

The flapper hair is a staple of the 1920s. The short glam wave is a must have, regardless of length. Actresses like Kate Bosworth and Beyonce have rocked the retro wave. You can achieve the look with a curling iron with a thick barrel and some hairspray. Tuck your length under if you have long hair for a less permanent look.

The Jewelry

The jewelry of the age has also been popping up in recent trends. You can steal the look by looking through old Gatsby movies or searching through thrift stores for vintage finds. If you're more dedicated to the look and want a brand new piece try out Tiffany & Co. for their Gatsby collection!

Mookie's Corner: Stripes and Roses

Mookie; weekly blog contributer
Hey Guys and Dolls!!!! Long time, no write!
*sad face* I know I know, but I'mmmm back!!! :-)
So lets jump right in!

There is this new trend (reminiscent of the trend from the early 2000s, but with a twist!) going around that a very fashionable friend of mine exposed me to. I remember looking at a picture of it and thinking 'Hmmmmm...this is different, but WONDERFUL all at the same time!' I could not shake it. I became unexpectedly intrigued, and the next thing you know- I was looking up all types of similar looks. I began trying to figure out how I could include this new trend into some of the styling projects I was working on, and even more, how could I make this work in regards to home decor (I love interior design!!)? It's like two worlds coming together. My name for the trend: Stripes and Roses. Check it out!

So I sat and I thought ... And I thought some more again. And I said to myself, 'why does this theme "feel" so familiar? Something about it seems weirdly not "new" at all.' One thing for sure about me is that I NEVER forget anything visual. FINALLYYYYY it hit me!! Mine eyes had seen this before!! AND it has to do with a very popular weirdly familiar film that we ALL know!!!
